The True Beauty of Motherhood

What is Motherhood? If you look up the word in the dictionary you will read the definition “the state of being a mother” but the word means so much more than that. To me, motherhood cannot be defined, it isn’t a straight path. It is a journey, with different entrances, exits, twists, and turns. This journey is messy, raw, beautiful, and unique.

Motherhood is Different for Everyone

What does motherhood look like to you? I became a mom in a less traditional way. When I was just 20 years old, I became a step-mom to the kindest, sassiest, most incredible little girl. When I first met her she was just 2 years old, and I knew right away that she was going to leave a huge impact on my life.

When I first became a step-mom everyone wanted to share what they thought about it. I heard a lot of hurtful comments ranging from “she isn’t your ‘real’ daughter” to “you aren’t a ‘real mom”. Most of these opinions revolved around a basic theme, there is just one way to become a mother. That is simply not true.

There is no ‘right way’ to become a mother. The word mother can not fit into a box. There is so much more to it. Whether you are a step-mom, a foster mom, an adoptive mom, a birth mom, or a chosen mom, you are the right mom for your child.

To me, a mother is someone who teaches, guides, protects, and most of all loves their child. It doesn’t matter how their child came to be in their life.

Perfection Doesn’t Exist

There is no such thing as the perfect mother. Motherhood doesn’t come with a manual, we move through life day by day just trying to figure it all out. We can go from feeling like we know nothing, to answering a question and feeling like we know everything.

I have messed up countless times. From burning dinner to losing my patience, the guilt of not meeting the high expectations I have of myself is unbearable. It can feel like I am doing everything wrong and I am screwing her up. The reality is kids see past your mistakes and are quick to forgive. Nothing makes my heart soar more than when I am brought a heart-shaped rock, a drawing of our family, or a whisper in my ear that says “you are my best friend”.

You are powerful and good. When it feels like you aren’t doing enough or aren’t being a “good mom” (because trust me, we all feel that at some point), remember that there is no perfect mother, but you are perfect for your children.

Motherhood Changes You

From the time you become a mother in whatever form that is, it changes you. You experience emotions you have never dreamed were possible. You discover a love so deep that it physically hurts along with worry and anxiety that doesn’t seem to go away, no matter how grownup your kids are.

Celebrating all Mothers

This Mother’s Day let’s celebrate ALL mothers and their diverse journeys. All of us experience motherhood in different ways and they are all equally beautiful. No matter your journey into motherhood, know that all of us here at RMO love you. We see the sacrifices you make, the passion and emotion you put in, and the unconditional love you give out.  We see you, we appreciate you, and we love you.
